Raw milk

In pregnancy: Only if… While breastfeeding: Safe

Rare, but serious if it happens

What makes it safe

Boil it before drinking

Why

Not pasteurised: listeria, salmonella, brucellosis risk. Avoid even if from 'trusted small farm'. Boil before use or avoid.

It changes after the birth

You can eat this again while breastfeeding: the pregnancy-specific risks (listeria, toxoplasmosis, salmonella) no longer apply after birth. Keep normal food hygiene.

Instead

  • Pasteurised milk
  • UHT milk
  • Yoghurt
