✓checkedReminder: about 60 days before the due date
In Spain the leave has gone up to 19 weeks
It is no longer sixteen. After the 2025 reform it is 17 weeks each, non-transferable, plus 2 weeks that can be taken at any point until the child turns 8 — nineteen in all. A single-parent family reaches 32. The first 6 weeks after the birth are compulsory and continuous for both parents. Almost every guide in circulation still shows the old number.

Three months back, and not a day more
Whichever the benefit — birth and childcare, risk during pregnancy — Social Security pays at most 3 months back from the day the application is filed. This is the mistake that actually costs money: taking the leave and leaving the paperwork for later. Those weeks never come back.

The two extra weeks are asked for separately
The 2 additional weeks are not part of the main application: they are requested on their own, at most 15 days before the day you want them to start, and they can be used at any point until the child turns 8. For babies born between 2 August 2024 and 31 July 2025 they can be claimed retroactively from January 2026 — under the same three-month rule.

Registering the birth: 72 hours, or ten days
The hospital notifies the Civil Registry within 72 hours, and that is normally the end of it — you sign from the bed. If it does not happen there the duty falls to the parents and the limit is 10 days; after that it takes a registry procedure to put right. Nothing else — health card, benefits — can be done before the child is registered.

Risk during pregnancy is not sick leave
If the job itself is the risk and there is no other post to move to, this is a benefit of its own: no minimum contribution period, only that you are registered. It runs from the day after work stops, and the paperwork starts with a report from your public-health doctor plus a statement from the employer about the job. The usual rule applies: 3 months backdated at most.
