The couple after birth: how to survive the first weeks
Almost all couples go through a crisis in the first 8-12 weeks postpartum. Doesn't mean something's broken — means you're going through one of life's biggest changes.
What usually happens
- Fatigue leading to arguments over small things
- Drastic reduction in couple time
- Disparity in tasks (if you're breastfeeding, you're "on duty" 24/7)
- Sex drive drop (hormones, tiredness, body changes)
What helps
- 10-minute evening talks: how are you really, not just "fine"
- Splitting night shifts: even if breastfeeding, partner can change diaper and bring baby
- Asking for outside help: grandparents, friends, sitter a few hours a week
- Realistic expectations: sex can return on different timelines for each
When to worry
If after 3-4 months you feel a distance that doesn't close, escalating conflicts, or one of you is mentally struggling — don't wait, couple or individual therapy is an investment, not a failure.
