Homemade mayonnaise

In pregnancy: Only if… While breastfeeding: Safe

Rare, but serious if it happens

What makes it safe

Use shop-bought, pasteurised

Why

Raw eggs: salmonella risk. Use only commercial (pasteurised) mayo.

It changes after the birth

You can eat this again while breastfeeding: the pregnancy-specific risks (listeria, toxoplasmosis, salmonella) no longer apply after birth. Keep normal food hygiene.

Instead

  • Shop-bought mayonnaise (pasteurised egg)
  • Greek yoghurt with lemon
  • Hummus
