Cured meats

Speck (smoked ham)

In pregnancy: Only if… While breastfeeding: Safe

Rare, but serious if it happens

What makes it safe

Cook it through before eating

Why

Smoked but not cooked: same toxoplasmosis risk as raw prosciutto. Cook it or replace with cooked ham.

It changes after the birth

You can eat this again while breastfeeding: the pregnancy-specific risks (listeria, toxoplasmosis, salmonella) no longer apply after birth. Keep normal food hygiene.

Instead

  • Speck cooked in a pan
  • Smoked cooked ham
