Frequently asked questions

About the app, pregnancy and the first year. Short answers, with the source where it matters.

Which pregnancy app is the best?

There isn't one that's right for everyone, but six questions help you choose: do the answers say where they come from? Does the app avoid diagnosing you? Does it show ads? Does what you write stay yours? Does it know your country's rules? What stays free? mamma&me is free for the core, has no ads, and covers both pregnancy and your baby's first year. The six questions, one by one.

Which pregnancy app is free, without a subscription?

mamma&me: the core is free, needs no subscription and stays free: pregnancy week by week, the diary, the PDF for your doctor, “Is it safe?”, “Is this normal?”, warning signs, the birth plan, the album and everything after the birth (feeds, sleep, growth, vaccinations, the baby book). Premium removes the limits on the chat and the scanner and opens all the recipes and workouts: monthly with a 7-day free trial, or once and for ever. The price is always shown in the app before you buy.

Does mamma&me have ads?

No. There are no banners or ads in the app, and the data of the people who use it is not for sale.

From which week of pregnancy can I use it?

From the positive test. All the pregnancy tools are there from day one; the only one that waits is the album, which starts at week 4. With the birth the app changes on its own: feeds, sleep, growth and vaccinations arrive, all the way to the first birthday.

Which app should I use for pregnancy and then for my newborn?

With mamma&me you don't need to switch: from the day of the birth, feeds, sleep and nappies (with night mode), growth on the WHO curves, your country's vaccination schedule, the firsts, lullabies, warning signs for the mother and “Your body after birth” all arrive on their own. “Is it safe?” switches to the breastfeeding answers, and what you wrote in pregnancy stays where it is.

Is NHS maternity care free?

Yes. On the NHS, appointments, scans, midwife care and the birth itself are free at the point of use, with no charge to pay and no code to show. What costs money in England is prescriptions and the dentist, and the maternity exemption certificate (MatEx) removes both for the whole pregnancy and 12 months after the birth. You apply on form FW8, signed by your midwife, GP or health visitor, and it is backdated by one month only, so apply as soon as you know. Sources: NHS and NHSBSA, checked on 8 September 2026.

Which deadlines matter in a UK pregnancy?

The ones that cost money if you miss them. The app lists them with the source and the days left, including: the MATB1 form, without which there is no maternity pay; telling your employer 15 weeks before the due date; the MatEx certificate; the £500 Sure Start Maternity Grant; claiming Maternity Allowance within three months; registering the birth within 42 days (21 in Scotland); and Child Benefit, which is backdated only three months.

What can't you eat when pregnant?

In the 174 “Is it safe?” cards, 21 foods are marked “Never”, including alcohol, raw meat and fish (tartare, carpaccio, oysters, raw prawns), raw eggs, liver and pâté, large fish such as swordfish, shark and marlin, wild mushrooms, energy drinks and vitamin A supplements. Another 19, such as cured raw ham, sushi with raw fish, brie and gorgonzola, are “Only if…”: it depends on how they're prepared. The full list, food by food.

How is the due date calculated?

You count 280 days, or 40 weeks, from the first day of your last period, and adjust if your cycle is longer or shorter than 28 days (Naegele's rule). It's an estimate: your scan confirms the date. Work it out here, or on the due date page.

Is there a pregnancy app for dads and partners?

mamma&me has a side for them. You send a link and, without installing anything, they see your week and what they can do. With the app and your Premium you work as a team: shared hospital bag, lists and tasks. Your diary stays private.

Does it work outside the UK?

Yes. It's in English, Italian and Spanish, and vaccinations, tests, deadlines and the emergency number follow your country: the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, Germany, France, Portugal, the Netherlands and Norway.

Does mamma&me replace my midwife or doctor?

No. It's an information app: it gives general information, points to its sources and tells you when it's time to contact the people looking after you. It doesn't diagnose. If something is urgent, call the emergency number.

What happens to my data?

It stays yours. What you've written never ends up behind a paywall, you can take it away in a file whenever you like, and you can delete your account. Your data is not for sale.
