Sleep changes: 5 positions that will help you rest
When your belly starts growing, sleep becomes a small puzzle. Five ways to stay comfortable — especially from the second trimester.
1. Left side with pillow between legs
Most recommended position: improves circulation and reduces pressure on the vena cava. A long pillow between knees aligns the pelvis.
2. Side with pillow under belly
In the third trimester the belly weight pulls your back. A small pillow underneath supports it and brings instant relief.
3. Half-seated with back pillows
If you have reflux or heartburn, sleep slightly elevated. Three stacked pillows work.
4. The hugged "U"
U-shaped pillows (or a folded large pillow) hug the whole body. Try them, lifesavers in the third trimester.
5. Alternating right side
Left is preferable, but alternating prevents hip pain. If you wake up on your back, don't panic — your body turns on its own if needed.
Avoid
- Prone (on belly) after the first trimester
- Supine (on back) after week 20
If sleep becomes very hard, talk to your OB-GYN — there are solutions and specific pillows for every case.
