Bluefin tuna / Bigeye tuna

In pregnancy: Never While breastfeeding: Caution

It builds up: that is why it is avoided entirely

Why

These are the tunas with the most mercury: avoid them during pregnancy. Fresh tuna on sale is often bluefin: ask which species it is and choose yellowfin or albacore, at most 1 portion a week and always well cooked.

It changes after the birth

Limit while breastfeeding: mercury can pass into breast milk. Prefer low-mercury fish (salmon, sardines, sole).

Instead

  • Well-cooked yellowfin tuna
  • Tinned tuna
  • Cooked mackerel
