Deli salads and packaged sandwiches

In pregnancy: Caution While breastfeeding: Safe

Rare, but serious if it happens

Why

Ready-made salads (Russian salad, rice or chicken salad, coleslaw) and packaged sandwiches sit in the fridge for a long time after they are made: listeria risk. Better to avoid them and make them at home, keep them in the fridge and eat them soon. If you buy them, keep them chilled and eat them before the use-by date.

It changes after the birth

You can eat this again while breastfeeding: the pregnancy-specific risks (listeria, toxoplasmosis, salmonella) no longer apply after birth. Keep normal food hygiene.
