Cured meats

Dried meat (jerky, carne salada, biltong)

In pregnancy: Only if… While breastfeeding: Safe

Rare, but serious if it happens

What makes it safe

Only thoroughly cooked in a hot dish, piping hot

Why

Raw dried or salted meat: toxoplasmosis and listeria risk, because drying and salting do not reliably get rid of them. Avoid it raw; it can only be eaten thoroughly cooked in a hot dish, until piping hot. Freezing it is not enough against listeria.

It changes after the birth

You can eat this again while breastfeeding: the pregnancy-specific risks (listeria, toxoplasmosis, salmonella) no longer apply after birth. Keep normal food hygiene.

Instead

  • Carne salada cooked in a pan, well done inside
  • Well-cooked roast beef
  • Roasted turkey
