Vitamin A (supplement / retinol)

In pregnancy: Never While breastfeeding: Never

It builds up: that is why it is avoided entirely

Why

High-dose retinol (preformed vitamin A) can cause fetal malformations. The recommended intake is 600 micrograms a day, and 3000 micrograms a day should not be exceeded: avoid supplements containing vitamin A unless your doctor prescribes them. Beta-carotene, the plant form in carrots and pumpkin, is a different matter and is safe — the body only converts what it needs.
